Shrinkflation?

Not a word I have ever come across, but it piqued my interest. As did the following article. What say you?

  1. Haha brilliant , I don’t think it’s in the dictionary at all ? It’s supporsed to be word play on the opposite of inflation I think . Why is it when I start a diet all I see is chocolate 😭 haha ! Anyway I think this is quite true especially in multipacks , the bag contents of crisps are getting lesser every time ! I swear I had a bag of walkers a while back and only had nine crisps in it !! I do feel even the purple one in the quality street is much smaller now, it used to be called the big purple one I’m sure but now it’s not big so I think they dropped the name ! It’s good for childhood obesity I suppose but not so great on the consumers who are getting less for their money :)

  2. I put this story on my other blog and one student said too true. You just have to buy two bars of chocolate instead!

  3. John bought a multi pack of Mars bars a few weeks ago and I swear I thought he'd picked up the fun size by mistake, they have shrunk so much. I remember mars bars and snickers used to be big, chunky bars but not any more.

I don't doubt there have been genuine price rises for ingredients over the years, particularly for sugar but I think manufacturers play on it to an extent as an excuse to increase the price while simultaneously reducing the size. It's a very subtle way of tricking consumers and then when you do get caught out you can blame 'sugar tax' and such like.

I'm sure Shazz mentioned coco cola are doing something quite similar now l, reducing bottle size and upping price.

I'd be interested to see the profits they make from each item as I have a feeling despite the 'increased cost of ingredients' they have properly compensated and I'd bet money their profits have grown.

  4. I guess there's a feeling that we are always tricked somehow or another by marketers and advertisers. Double whammy on size or price. Maybe the trick is to wait for the chocolate to go out of date and grab the bargains then!
