This is an interesting wee story worth having a look at.

  1. It's a shame that she has lived most of her life unable to perform tasks many of us take for granted , through lack of education. But it's very uplifting to see she now has a new opportunity and is able to read and that this brings her joy and makes her life more enjoyable and also easier! It's nice to see that in the modern day the world is evolving even in third world countries although probably not as much as it should. It's a nice story, if you look at how far this lady has come in her life and that reading now brings her such joy !! :)

  2. This really gets you thinking how much we read in our everyday lives without even realising, I imagine even those who don't think of themselves as 'readers' would be surprised to realise how much they are in fact readers after all.
There were so many examples that I didn't even consider till now, like how alarming it would be to sign a document you can't read or administer medicine to your sick child without knowing if you're doing it properly.
What is saddest of all is that this is not an isolated case, illiteracy is prevelant throughout the world. This is a great example of why investment is needed in basic education for ALL.

  3. Great comments both. Yes, sometimes we do take things for granted, and whilst some people often say they don't read, they do. All the time. But perhaps not books or the like. This is indeed a story about the distance this lady has travelled in her life.

  4. The kind of story I like to see in the news! Children coming home with books and family unable to teach them is exactly why education through the generations is so Important. The progression in developing countries is slow but it is there and it is wonderful! Her statement about understanding the "good and bad" in society hits the nail on the head. Would the world be so awful if everyone received a good (unbiased) education? Would there be decreased crime rates? Could education be the cure for extremism? It's a great topic.
