This is an extraordinary story worth reading about in the link above.

Social media can be many things, but when this happens, it is rather inspiring!

  1. That’s a nice story. The power of social media is fantastic when used correctly like this.
I don’t use social media any longer I prefer a good old phone call or text message to stay in touch, however its great for staying in touch with friends and family across the world.

  2. Yes you’re quite right Rachel. You’re becoming a regular poster now and I’m enjoying your reflections. Regarding social media per se, there are plenty pros and cons to all of the various platforms and I’m sure we’ve all seen both sides of the coin somewhere along the line. I was offered a job the other day from somebody who had stumbled across our humble learning space incidentally!

  3. I seen a story on stv news today that was very similar to this, the man who was homeless stood guard beside a open car window as it had a bag and cash in it.
He had nothing of his own and dependant on alcohol he done the right thing and through the powers of social media a go fund me page has raised £10K for him.
I try put my thoughts in when I can sometimes I have no opinion either way.

    1. There is nothing wrong with taking a neutral stance. This is quite important when you are conducting research for one thing! I shall do some research of my own and have a look at this story. Great to see some good news for a change. I donate to the Social Bite restaurant over the Festive period which affords homeless people a Christmas dinner. I have been doing this for a couple of years now.

  5. What a great story, delighted this family have not lost their business.

Despite a lot of arguments that social media detaches us from one another I think the opposite is true. I think social media is a wonderful thing that connects us to experiences we would otherwise know nothing about.

Via social media I follow world news, politics, support charities, plan activities for my kids and keep in touch with old friends and family who live abroad. I doubt I would do many of these things, and countless other things, without social media.

I'm not suggesting there aren't risks (I know online bullying is a huge issue now) however used wisely social media can be a great tool for getting human interest stories out there and for raising awareness of a cause (whatever that may be). This case being a perfect example of social media being used for good!

Mark, very interesting on the job offer...I hope this doesn't mean you're leaving us?!
